**Quick answer:** Solar tempered glass is the ultra-clear, low-iron glass that forms the front cover of a photovoltaic module. Ordinary window glass absorbs too much light and breaks under thermal load, so module glass is low-iron, tempered and coated on the inner face with an anti-reflective layer. That combination reaches 94.5% light transmittance against roughly 91.5% for uncoated low-iron glass. Standard thicknesses are 3.2 mm, 2.5 mm and 2.0 mm, chosen against module weight and mechanical load rating. The glass must survive IEC 61215 mechanical load and hail tests, which is why it is thermally tempered rather than annealed. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression so an impact produces small blunt fragments instead of sharp shards, and it also raises the bending strength the module relies on under snow and wind load.
